Computer Class 3 – Application Programs

 

Three General Classes:

  1. Utilities such as virus checkers, internet browsers, and file managers that are really extensions of the operating system.

  2. Games and educational programs - with these you need to be careful of the system requirements - some may require 3D video cards, etc.

  3. Home and office applications.

  4. An example is MS Home Essentials that includes:

    • Internet browser

    • MS Word

    • Encarta Encyclopedia

    • MS Works - a combination word processor, spread sheet, and data base system.

Selecting the right Application Programs.  The key is selecting the right application software.  

 

The criteria for selection are:

  1. What do you want to do? (have a good manual system first)

  2. What software will do this for you?

  3. Is the software compatible with your computer?

  4. Can you learn and use the software?

  5. Who do you need to interface with?

Examples:

Word processing - past experience, coordinating with others, special needs.

Accounting - personal, business?  If business do you need inventory, payroll, etc. Is the software compatible with your accountant, etc?

 

Where to get software:

Internet, Computer Stores, etc.

 

Installing Programs

  1. Read instructions

  2. Check that your hardware meets requirements.

  3. Make notes on your system and perform backup.

  4. Install and make notes as you go along.

  5. Test the software.
